Valentines

We celebrated Valentine's day on Sunday, since we'd be working on Monday. Took a trip to the zoo and got to see baby leopards nursing, a lion yawn, butterflies, children frightened of butterflies, and orangutans swinging from rope to rope. It was a gorgeous, sunny day out. The temperature got to nigh spring temps, we had a picnic, it was perfect. Went home and made supper and watched Paranormal Activity 2 a la Redbox.

It was scary, but not nearly as much as the first. It was really the exposition of the first movie. All in all it was a perfect day.

Winter, I'm ready for spring. Let's get on that.

Go Bears!

We don't so much follow sports. That's all I'll say about the Super Bowl.

Made cucumber sandwiches today. Delicious. The red onions in one mix, despite my attempts to use as little as possible, were still a bit powerful.

Went to the library for movies. Of the stack of movies I brought home, amongst them was the BBC's Sherlock. The British really know how to make a series: 90 minute episodes, movie style arc, etc. The first "season" was only 3 episodes long, I think the next season will also be 3 episodes... I'm fine with that.

Learned to make origami lotuses. I think I'm going to get some proper paper and make pretty colored ones. Won a bid on a bundle of chunky, light blue yarn that will likely become a bag of sorts; still working out the design.

Cucumber sandwiches for lunch tomorrow. Looking forward to work? Who ever is, really?

Hollywood, I Think I Hate you

Sitting here on snow day 2, eating a bowl of maple/brown sugar wheat whatnots, watching The Rock on On Demand, and I cry a little.

1996

Not that The Rock is terribly good. I mean, it's terribly... terrible. Looking back on it, there's so many familiar faces. Let me make a list:

You've got your heavy hitters.
-Nicholas Cage
-Sean Connery
-Ed Harris
-David Morse

Lesser known.
-John C. McGinley
-Tony Todd
-Bokeem Woodbine
-Claire Forlani
-James Caviezel
-Anthony Clark
-Todd Louiso
-William Forsythe

and Diedrich Bader, I think. In the beginning of the movie goofing off in the office.

These are just people I recognized. Not all of them have come to great fame, I suppose. But, that list is fairly long for a movie such as this. Sure, the movie was made in 96 (that long ago? christ) and a number of these folks were all but unknown. But hey, I thought it was impressive.

I Need 50cc's of Less Remakes, Stat!

Was writing a little hundred word article on Russel Brand hosting SNL in the coming month or two and discovered a little bit of disappointing information: Brand is slated to play Arthur in a remake of Arthur and Fred in a remake of Drop Dead Fred.

First: Why, God, why? I'm not sure that either of these movies actually did so well as to necessitate a remake some 20 years or less after the fact.

Second: Has everything really been done already? At the end of the summer of 2010 I counted something like 18 (maybe 16) remakes, sequels, etc going into Christmas. In that batch I found Inception. Christopher Nolan's fantastic mind-bender. Now, the first part of Deathly Hallows (Harry Potter) fell into that 18 count but I went and saw it anyways. But, really nothing original and fresh aside from Inception.

Well, I really hope this isn't the future of my movie going experience. I feel like I've got a few years left in me and I'd like a little more than one good movie a year to enjoy. Sure, there's a few that stray away from me and I catch on video (Winter's Bone) but that prospect is just a little disconcerting.

Now, you might say: You've got an English degree, why don't you do something about it? Well... I'm lazy. Or, I'm trying but at my own pace. You call it what you want.

Still looking forward to Black Swan, still have passes that expire in March. Still looking forward to Deathly Hallows Part 2 in the Summer. And maybe, just maybe something will make it's way down the pipes that won't be a terrible disappointment.

In closing: Why in the hell don't I have a copy of Groundhog Day on my shelf? I don't know either.
